FDC Stationary Value : 5.00 Rs Artist Tej Bahadur Chitrakar was born as a second son to Shivadas and Ashamati on 25th Sept. 1898 in the family of Chitrakars- a community- Traditionally entrusted by the State or the Malla rules of Kathmandu Valley as the sole custodian of tradition of painting since 14th century AD. This extraordinary family environment and his own talent since his early childhood led him to the Govt. college of fine art in Calcutta in 1922 as one of the earliest Nepali to study academically the higher education in fine art. His historic and illustrious art journey began with his successful completion of graduation fine art- making him. The earliest Nepali to receive the degree in fine art with distinction in portraiture in Oil in 1927 AD, He returned to Nepal in 1929 AD. Throughput his life- till his passing away in 1971 AD, he remained a tireless painter- contributing to create an innumerable number of exquisite paintings in diverse subjects, styles, and medium- making him one of the most versatile painters ever born in Nepal. In addition, as a dedicated art educationist he continuedly dedicated his life to develop a new generation of new Nepali painters. Many of his enduring paintings, today; are in the collection of prestigious Art Galleries worldwide including Nepal. This painting is presently hi the collection of Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan. The postage stamp next to the postage stamp depicting the self portrait of artist Tej Bahadur Chitrakar depicts an oil painting by the artist in 1969m AD. Entitled Tributes to the Forefathers', this work is Tej Bahadur's expression of gratitude towards his ancestors and also his effort to preserve for posterity- the earlier ways Nepali painting tradition. This paintings remains one of the great works of Tej Bahadur Chitrakar. The painting successfully portrays the then physical ambience of a traditional painter- replete with interior decor, attire of the artist and the materials then used for painting in traditional ways. The Postal Services Department has issued the commemorative Postage! Stamp to commemorate these valuable contributions in Nepali Art and his services to the country as a whole.
