Finest fiction writers in the modern and postmodern era of Nepali literature

Rameshwor Sharma Chalise, better known as 'Ramesh Vikal' was a versatile personality in the fields of arts and literature was born as son of mother Chhayadevi Chalise and Father Chandra Shekhar Chalise at Arubari, Kathmandu on Kartik 29, 1985 BS, He is well known as one of the finest fiction writers in the modern and postmodern era of Nepali literature.

He also painted about one hundred paintings, which fall under three categories - portrait, landscape and miscellaneous. He could also play with ease such musical instruments like flute, violin, sitar, harmonium, and tabla.

A prolific writer, Vikal has to his credit about sixty books, including four novels, seven short story collections, and about twenty five books for children. However, fiction was his forte - the short story and the novel, lie wielded his pen in other genres, too. He produced several dramas and one-act plays, wrote travelogues, humors and satire: a number of works for children stories, illustrated stories and comic, dramas-and translated several works from English into Nepali for children. Similarly, his folk tales and books for children have set a new trend in Nepali Literature. His folk tales are popular among the general masses as they are written to suit the taste of the readers, which provide both entertainment and a moral message. Human sentiments, social ambience, cultural settings are the major traits of Vikal's story writing.

His non literary life was also eventful. He served in the government for twenty year; taught in school and university for several years and served as Professor at the Central Department of Nepali, Tribhuvan University. He was a founder of four schools and as also affiliated with other various associations. He also received a number of honors, prizes and medals, including Madan Puraskar (1961) and Mahendra Pragya Puraskar (1981).

Apart from literary field, Vikal has made significant contribution to the social sector. He got involved in various social organizations and played an active role in generating social awareness in the society. He helped establish Binayak School in Chabahil and worked for sometime as a teacher there. In Aarubari he opened a primary school which is now being run as Arunodaya Secondary School. He also helped establish some other schools.

In honor of his valuable contribution in the field of Nepali Literature, Govt. of Nepal, Postal Services Department has issued this commemorative postage stamp.
